Abner Butterfield is proud to announce that we and UWM have jointly selected Paul Rowane for our 2012 summer internship. Paul is a May 2013 candidate for a B.S. in Business Administration. He will be working with us to conduct market research, help develop marketing strategies, and develop a communications campaign. We're happy to have him on board!
University of Mary Washington / Abner Butterfield Ice Cream Company Internship Program
Abner Butterfield is proud to announce a partnership with the University of Mary Washington to provide internships for Juniors, Seniors, and Grad Students. One internship is available for Spring 2012. Two internships will be available for Summer 2012. All three are currently open to all disciplines; the program will be tailored to the student's educational background and needs. Program Information
Abner Butterfield Ice Cream Company is looking for students seeking to participate in business activities and processes leading to a greater understanding of how small business operates. This will provide a practical understanding as a companion to the theoretical knowledge acquired in traditional classes. While geared towards business students, the internship is open to students of other disciplines as many talents, skills, and abilities are needed to succeed in the corporate environment.
Courses of Study
Specific areas of study will be tailored with the needs of both Abner Butterfield and the selected student in mind. The areas of study may include one or more of the topic areas below or others as may be determined during the interview process.
Production Planning and Research
- Supplier research, cost assessment, production scheduling
Business Planning
- Development of business plans
- Cash flow planning
- Development of capital business cases, analysis of alternatives
Marketing
- Research markets, traffic studies, competitive research
- Development of marketing and communications plans or campaigns
- Development of social media/internet based tools
Customer Management
- Opinion polling
- Field sales study
Product Development
- Meeting customer requirements
- Flavor trend research
Application and Selection
Applicants will be selected based on successful completion of an on-line application, resume review, and one or more “job” interviews with company personnel. The on-line application is linked at the bottom of this page. Note: This internship may also be accessed through UMW's Employ An Eagle Site.
Other Requirements
Abner Butterfield produces food products for public consumption which contain known allergens. Interns must be free of medical issues that might compromise food safety or result in injury or illness to the intern. For these reasons, an intern must have a signed statement from a physician regarding general health and susceptibility to allergens prior to being granted access to production areas. The need for access will be determined during the interview; interns will be provided with the appropriate forms at that time if needed. Completed forms will be kept on file in accordance with company privacy policy.
Successful applicants will be required to read and acknowledge a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) prior to obtaining access to company confidential information. After the NDA is signed, the intern will be provided a general information package that details company and product related information that will be a helpful background for the study.
The intern will be provided a study plan and guidelines for assessment. The intern will meet with the Abner Butterfield and/or the faculty sponsor weekly or more often as required for assignments, to review progress, adjust assignments, and receive feedback on performance. Internship contact time will include independent research assignments, team assignments with company personnel, and field work/studies.
Opportunity
Additional internships will be available for the Summer 2012 session for up to three credit hours/126 hours contact time. A tuition reimbursement or stipend will be proffered upon successful completion of the internship (amount to be determined). The intern(s) may be offered full- or part-time employment upon successful completion of the internship.
